GM defeats Toyota to retake top US carmaker title following 2.5% sales increase
General Motors has reclaimed its spot as the top US automaker after posting a 2.5% increase in new vehicle sales in 2022. The Detroit-based company reported sales of 2,274,088 vehicles, beating Toyota’s annual sales of 2,108,458 units in the country.
This marks a significant milestone for GM, which lost its position as the top US automaker to Toyota in 2021 for the first time since 1931. The company has worked hard to regain its leading position, introducing a range of new and redesigned models, investing in electric and autonomous vehicle technology, and expanding its global reach.
“We are very pleased to be returning to the top spot as the number one automaker in the United States,” said Mark Reuss, GM’s president. “This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees, as well as the strength of our products and our commitment to meeting the changing needs of our customers.”
GM’s strong performance was driven by strong demand for its pickup trucks and SUVs, as well as the success of its Cadillac and Chevrolet brands. The company’s Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups both saw significant sales increases, while the Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV also performed well.
In addition to its traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, GM has also seen growing demand for its electric and hybrid models. The company’s Chevrolet Bolt EV and Cadillac Escalade Hybrid both saw strong sales, as consumers increasingly prioritize fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
GM’s success in the US market comes as the company continues to expand its global operations. The company recently announced plans to enter the Indian market, and has also increased its presence in China and Europe.
“We are committed to being a leader in the global automotive industry, and our success in the United States is an important part of that,” said Reuss. “We are focused on delivering high-quality, innovative products to our customers around the world and will continue to work hard to earn their loyalty and trust.”
The news of GM’s return to the top spot is sure to be welcomed by the company’s employees and investors, and is a testament to the resilience and determination of the American automaker. With a strong lineup of vehicles and a commitment to electric and autonomous technology, GM is well-positioned to maintain its position as the top US automaker in the years ahead.
