Hope by now you came to know Hitachi belongs to which country. Yes, your guess is right Hitachi is a Japanese-based company!

The business rapidly developed throughout the Taishō period (1912–1926) under Odaira’s direction, with the help of his younger brother Masaru Ibuka’s technical expertise.

The mining firm owned by Fusanosuke Kuhara in Hitachi County, Ibaraki Prefecture, was the origin of the corporation when it was first started as an internal enterprise. In 1918, Odaira relocated its headquarters to the city of Tokyo.

In 1924, Ibuka traveled to the United States and secured funding to set up a research laboratory there.

The first of these was the Tokyo Laboratory in Washington, D.C., which eventually became Hitachi America, Ltd.

Ibuka was convinced that developing the company required the recruitment of young engineers and management trainees from overseas.

In 1927 he returned to Japan with 109 young recruits including Takeshiro Maeda, the future general manager of Hitachi America.

The company continued to grow rapidly, opening a new factory in the city of Hamamatsu in 1928 and establishing overseas subsidiaries in England and China by 1930.

Hitachi went public in 1937. In 1943, Ibuka established the research laboratory that later became Hitachi Central Research Laboratory.

During World War II, Hitachi manufactured armaments, electric motors and generators, radar equipment, and chemical plants.

In 1946 the company made its first move outside of Japan, setting up a sales office in New York City.

The postwar period was characterized by rapid growth, due in part to American military contracts for electrical equipment.

Hitachi expanded its overseas operations, setting up subsidiaries in Switzerland (1949), Brazil (1957), Australia (1960), and India (1969). In 1960, Hitachi established a joint venture with General Electric in the United States, called General Hitachi, Inc.

This expanded Hitachi’s product line to include semiconductor devices, monitors and projectors, medical diagnostic equipment, and elevators and escalators.

In 1981, Hitachi acquired the electron microscope business of British manufacturer JEOL Ltd.

The company’s 1987 purchase of International Computers Limited (ICL) brought England’s ICL mainframe computers into Hitachi’s product line.

Hitachi has diversified businesses in seven sectors: Information & Telecommunication Systems, Social Infrastructure, High Functional Materials & Components, Financial Services, Power Systems, Electronic Systems & Equipment, and Digital Media & Consumer Products.

The company’s electronics division makes consumer electronics products such as televisions and digital cameras under the Hitachi, JVC and Toshiba brands.

The Hitachi Group comprises over 1,000 companies, with over 320,000 employees worldwide.

Hitachi was ranked the 13th most innovative company globally in Thomson Reuters’ Top 100 Global Innovators list for 2015.

The company has a long-standing reputation for innovation, ranking number one in the IW1000’s list of Japan’s most innovative companies three years in a row from 2010 to 2012.

In 2015, Hitachi was named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere for the seventh consecutive year.
