History of MG

The history of MG dates back to the early 1920s when Cecil Kimber, the Sales Manager for Morris Garages, began experimenting with improving the cheap and cheerful Morris Minor.

His efforts resulted in the creation of a line of cars that were both faster and more sporty than their Morris counterparts.

The first factory-built MG was the 14/28 Super Sports, which was based on the 1928 Morris Minor 1000. Just 388 of these cars were built between October 1927 and March 1930. They were followed by the more successful 18/80 which went on sale in 1929.

By 1936, MG had become Britain’s largest-selling sports car brand with 7500 cars sold that year. The success continued into 1937 with sales more than doubling to 16500 cars.

The Second World War put a halt to production as factory resources were turned over to the war effort.

In 1940, the company was requisitioned by British government and became part of British Leyland where it remained until 1986 when it was once again privatized under the name Austin Rover Group.

In 2005, MG Rover Group went into administration and was bought by China’s Nanjing Automotive Corporation (NAC) for £53 million. NAC then established MG Motor as a wholly owned subsidiary of SAICMotor-UK later that same year.

In 2011, SAICMotor themselves received a majority stake in NAC following a merger between the two companies making them both wholly owned subsidiaries of SAICMotor.

Today, all new MGs are designed and engineered at Longbridge by a team led by Matthew Cheyne who joined from Bentley Motors in 2013.

All new MGs currently in production are roadsters or coupes derived from models originally launched by other manufacturers.

The current crop of MGs includes: the MG6 GT (originally launched as the TF), a 4-door fastback based on an earlier Rover design; the MG3 (originally launched as an updated version of the Chinese market Roewe 350); the MG GS SUV (originally launched as an updated version of the Chinese market Baojun 560); and finally, the all-new ZS SUV which replaces the previous generation MG GS globally but uses an entirely different platform from its Chinese counterpart.

Some of MG’s most popular models include the MG3, MG6, and MG GS. The MG3 is a small hatchback that’s perfect for city driving, while the MG6 is a sporty sedan that offers a more dynamic driving experience.

The MG GS is an SUV that combines stylish looks with practicality and versatility.

MG is committed to offering high-quality, affordable products and services that appeal to a global audience.

The company has won numerous awards for its vehicles, including the 2019 European Car of the Year. MG is headquartered in Longbridge, Birmingham, and has assembly plants in China and Thailand.

The company plans to expand its operations in the future, with a new factory in Indonesia set to open in 2020.

In addition to producing cars, MG Motor is also involved in motorsport. The company has a long history of success in both rallying and racing, and continues to compete at the highest levels of both disciplines.
